About This Product

This is an original Japan 100 Famous Mountains map T-shirt by Hasegawa Shizen Kobo, featuring all 100 mountains across a map of the Japanese archipelago together with the surrounding terrain.

Over the years, I have looked through many books, websites, and hiking resources about the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. However, I found it difficult to find a single map that clearly showed not only where all 100 mountains are located in Japan, but also how they connect to major mountain ranges and what kind of terrain surrounds them.

That led me to think:

“If I cannot find one, I will make one myself.”

That idea became the starting point for this T-shirt.

Rather than simply listing the names of 100 mountains, the design also incorporates their relative locations, mountain ranges and regions, prefectural boundaries, major lakes, and elevation differences.

The goal was to create a map that allows you to see, learn about, and enjoy Japan’s mountains as one complete landscape.

This T-shirt can also be enjoyed as your own personal climbing record.

Using a fabric marker or pen suitable for writing on fabric, you can mark the mountains you have climbed, add color to the mountain symbols or names, or make a small check mark next to each completed peak.

As the number of marked mountains gradually increases, your own climbing history becomes part of the T-shirt itself.

Because the theme is the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan, I also wanted the shirt to be practical for actual hiking and outdoor use. For that reason, this product uses the Sport-Tek ST350, a lightweight performance T-shirt with moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties.

It is suitable not only for mountain climbing and hiking, but also for travel, walking, outdoor activities, and everyday wear.

Recommended for anyone who loves Japanese mountains, is interested in the geography of Japan, or wants to learn more about the 100 Famous Mountains.

About the Design

This design places all 100 of Japan’s Famous Mountains on a map of the Japanese archipelago, together with their mountain names, elevations, major mountain regions, prefectural boundaries, and major lakes.

Among the 100 Famous Mountains, there are cases where the name of a larger mountain area differs from the actual summit name, or where several peaks are treated collectively as one mountain. The way these names are presented may also vary depending on the source.

For this reason, during production I compared multiple references, including Kyuya Fukada’s “Nihon Hyakumeizan” (100 Famous Mountains of Japan), other books about the 100 Famous Mountains, hiking references, and information from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.

Mountain names and elevations were checked against multiple sources and then standardized primarily according to the reference books used as the main basis during production.

Please note that mountain names, elevations, and related information may change due to new surveys or revisions to reference materials.

The terrain is designed to show differences from lowlands and plains to high-elevation mountainous areas.

By looking at the entire map, you can also enjoy the larger structure of Japan’s mountain geography, including:

  • where major mountain regions begin

  • how mountain ranges connect to one another

  • which regions contain especially high concentrations of the 100 Famous Mountains

Prefectural boundaries are shown with white lines, and major lakes are also included.

The goal was not simply to create a map showing the 100 mountains, but rather a map that allows you to enjoy the location of the 100 Famous Mountains while viewing the terrain of the entire Japanese archipelago.

Particular attention was given to mountainous regions where many Famous Mountains are concentrated, including the Northern Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Alps.

If all mountain names were placed directly at their actual positions, the labels would overlap and become difficult to read. To solve this, I repeatedly adjusted the positions of the mountain names, leader lines, and display methods while trying to preserve the actual relationships between the mountains and mountain regions as much as possible.

I also consulted people with extensive hiking experience rather than relying only on my own knowledge. Their feedback helped refine the mountain names, regions, positional relationships, and overall readability.

I have currently climbed 11 of the 100 Famous Mountains myself.

For that reason, I wanted to create a map that could be enjoyed both by people who already know the mountains well and by those who are only beginning to learn about them.

There is also a small design detail in the “日本百名山” lettering placed at the top of the map.

If you look closely, you can find scenery inspired by Mt. Fuji incorporated into the characters.

As one of the most iconic mountains among the 100 Famous Mountains, Mt. Fuji is included subtly so that it adds character to the design without overpowering the map itself.

See, learn about, and enjoy all 100 Famous Mountains of Japan on one map.

This T-shirt was created with that idea in mind and refined over many hours of work.

How to Use It as a Summit Record

This T-shirt can also be used as a personal climbing record by marking the 100 Famous Mountains you have already climbed.

Use a fabric marker labeled as suitable for fabric or textile use, available from craft stores, discount shops, and similar retailers.

You can add a small mark, check, or color to the mountain symbol or mountain name for each peak you have completed.

For example, using a fine-tip gold or silver fabric marker can make it easy to gradually add your completed mountains and turn the shirt into your own personalized Japan 100 Famous Mountains map.

Another idea is to mark the mountain you climbed that day and take a commemorative photo at the summit.

Each time you climb another mountain, the record grows, and the T-shirt itself gradually becomes part of your hiking memories.

Please note that color appearance, setting methods, and wash durability vary depending on the marker used.

Always check the marker manufacturer’s instructions and use a product that is suitable for fabric and polyester.

Testing the marker on an inconspicuous area first is recommended.
