Japan 100 Famous Mountains Map T-Shirt | Hyakumeizan Hiking & Elevation Map
Japan 100 Famous Mountains Map T-Shirt | Hyakumeizan Hiking & Elevation Map
About This Product
This is an original Japan 100 Famous Mountains map T-shirt by Hasegawa Shizen Kobo, featuring all 100 mountains across the Japanese archipelago on a single detailed map.
Over the years, I have looked through many books, websites, and hiking resources about Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. However, I found it difficult to find a map that allows you to see at a glance where the 100 mountains are located within Japan, how the major mountain ranges connect, and what kind of terrain surrounds them.
That led me to think:
“If I can’t find one, why not make it myself?”
That idea became the starting point for this T-shirt.
Rather than simply listing the names of 100 mountains, the design also incorporates the relationships between the peaks, major mountain ranges and regions, prefectural boundaries, major lakes, and differences in elevation.
The goal was to create a map that lets you see, learn about, and enjoy Japan’s mountains as one connected landscape.
Because this design is based on Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, I also wanted the T-shirt itself to be suitable for actual hiking and outdoor use. For that reason, this product uses the Sport-Tek ST350, a lightweight performance T-shirt with moisture-wicking properties.
It can be enjoyed not only for hiking and mountain climbing, but also for travel, walking, outdoor activities, and everyday wear.
It is recommended for people who love Japan’s mountains, those interested in Japanese geography, and anyone who wants to learn more about the 100 Famous Mountains.
About the Design
This design places all 100 of Japan’s Famous Mountains across the Japanese archipelago, together with information such as mountain names, elevations, major mountain regions, prefectural boundaries, and major lakes.
Among Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, there are cases where the name of the mountain region differs from the name of the actual summit, as well as mountains that are treated as a single mountain even though they consist of multiple peaks.
For that reason, naming conventions may vary depending on the source.
During the design process, I compared multiple references, including Kyuya Fukada’s Nihon Hyakumeizan (100 Famous Japanese Mountains), other books about the 100 Famous Mountains, hiking-related resources, and information from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.
For mountain names and elevations, several sources were reviewed, and the information was standardized primarily according to the Japan 100 Famous Mountains reference books used as the main basis during production.
Please note that mountain names, elevations, and related information may change in the future due to new surveys, revised measurements, or updated reference materials.
The terrain is represented so that viewers can sense the difference between lowland plains and higher mountain regions.
By looking at the entire map, you can also enjoy seeing where mountain regions begin, how mountain ranges connect, and which areas contain particularly high concentrations of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains.
To make the relationship between prefectures easier to understand, prefectural boundaries are shown with white lines, and major lakes are also included.
The goal was not simply to create a map showing only the 100 mountains, but rather a map that allows you to enjoy the locations of the mountains while viewing the terrain of the entire Japanese archipelago.
Particular attention was given to mountain regions where many of the 100 Famous Mountains are concentrated, including the Northern Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Alps.
If all mountain names were placed directly on the map without adjustment, the labels would overlap and become difficult to read.
For that reason, the positions of the mountain names, leader lines, and labeling methods were adjusted repeatedly while trying to preserve the actual relationships between the mountains and mountain regions as much as possible.
I also did not rely only on my own knowledge. During the creation process, I consulted people who are knowledgeable about mountain climbing and received feedback on mountain names, mountain regions, locations, and overall readability.
I have personally climbed only 11 of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains so far.
That is exactly why I wanted to create a map that could be enjoyable for experienced mountain enthusiasts while also remaining easy to understand for people who are just beginning to learn about Japan’s mountains.
There is also a small detail hidden in the “日本百名山” lettering placed at the top of the map.
If you look closely, you will find a landscape inspired by Mount Fuji incorporated into the characters.
As one of the most iconic mountains among Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, Mount Fuji has been included subtly without overpowering the overall design.
See, learn about, and enjoy all 100 of Japan’s Famous Mountains on a single map of Japan.
This T-shirt was created with that idea in mind and developed through many hours of careful adjustment.
