About This Product

An original route map T-shirt by Hasegawa Shizen Kobo featuring Japan National Route 4, which runs north along the eastern side of Japan from Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Aomori City.

National Route 4 begins at Nihonbashi in Chuo City, Tokyo, and continues through Saitama, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate Prefectures before reaching Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture. It is one of Japan’s major long-distance national highways.

This design was created based on the designer’s own experience of driving the entire length of National Route 4 from Nihonbashi, Tokyo, to Aomori City. The total driving time for the complete journey was approximately 22 hours.

Rather than being simply a road map, this T-shirt brings together a personal record of a long-distance drive and memories of traveling along the route.

It is recommended for anyone who has traveled National Route 4, as well as those who enjoy long-distance driving, motorcycle touring, visiting roadside stations, road maps, and exploring Japan.

Whether as a keepsake of completing the entire route or simply as a unique map T-shirt for road enthusiasts, this design lets you enjoy the journey from Tokyo to Aomori.

About the Design

The front features the route of Japan National Route 4 from Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Aomori City, displayed together with a map of Japan.

The design also includes 15 Michi-no-Eki roadside stations located along National Route 4.

The starting point and destination are marked with yellow double circles, while the roadside stations along the route are represented by white circles, allowing you to visually follow the long journey of Route 4 on a single map.

One distinctive feature of this design is the section between Koshigaya City in Saitama Prefecture and Utsunomiya City in Tochigi Prefecture.

Along this section, the original National Route 4 runs parallel to the New National Route 4 (Shin Route 4), which follows a route farther east. Instead of showing only one road, this design includes both National Route 4 and New National Route 4.

There is also an interesting bridge along National Route 4 that is written with the same Japanese characters as Tokyo’s famous “Nihonbashi,” but pronounced differently.

This is Nihonbashi, pronounced “Himotobashi,” which crosses the Gohyakugawa River on the border between Koriyama City and Motomiya City in Fukushima Prefecture.

It is said that the name was formed by combining the Japanese character “日” from Hiwada and “本” from Motomiya. This makes it a fascinating location along Route 4—a second “日本橋” encountered on the journey north from Tokyo’s Nihonbashi.

Another notable point along the route is Jusanbongi Pass (Jusanbongi Toge) in Ichinohe Town, Ninohe District, Iwate Prefecture.

Also known as Okunakayama Pass or Nakayama Pass, it sits at an elevation of approximately 458 meters (1,503 ft) and is known as the highest point on National Route 4. After traveling north from the Kanto Plain into the Tohoku region, this pass is one of the symbolic landmarks of the route.

The stated length of National Route 4 can vary depending on whether a source uses total road length, actual route length, or another measurement method.

For this reason, rather than focusing only on a single distance figure, this design emphasizes where National Route 4 runs, the places it passes through, and how it connects Tokyo with Aomori.

From Nihonbashi to Aomori — a road actually traveled, captured on a single map.

By including not only the route itself but also roadside stations and distinctive landmarks encountered along the way, this T-shirt was designed to convey the feeling of a long journey along Japan National Route 4.
