About This Product

This is an original T-shirt by Hasegawa Shizen Kobo, featuring a Japanese coastal road and tunnel scene expressed within the bold brush-style kanji character 道 (Michi), meaning “road” or “way.”

At the center of the design is the powerful kanji 道 (Michi / MICHI), rendered in a traditional brush-style form.

Along Japan’s coastline, roads often run between the sea and steep terrain, passing through tunnels as they connect towns and regions. These routes offer a distinctive travel experience, with changing scenery as the road continues through mountains, tunnels, and open coastal landscapes.

This T-shirt captures the feeling of driving along a seaside road, passing through tunnels, and continuing toward the scenery beyond, all within the shape of the kanji 道.

The design combines the road itself with blue sky, green slopes, tunnels, and road signs, expressing the atmosphere of driving along Japan’s coastal roads and the scenery encountered along the journey.

It also incorporates two road-sign motifs that are familiar among Japanese road enthusiasts: ONIGIRI and HEKISA.

This shirt is recommended for people who enjoy driving, motorcycle touring, tunnels, road scenery, coastal routes, maps, kanji, and Japanese culture.

It also makes a memorable souvenir from Japan or a distinctive gift for someone interested in Japanese roads and travel scenery.

About the Design

The main feature of the design is the bold brush-style kanji 道.

Rather than simply placing the character on the shirt, the kanji itself is used as a canvas for expressing Japanese road scenery.

Inside the character are scenes of a coastal road, tunnels along the route, surrounding greenery, blue sky, and road signs.

The central section features a road leading toward a tunnel, creating a sense of moving forward and suggesting the anticipation of new scenery waiting beyond the tunnel.

The design also includes ONIGIRI and HEKISA, two road-sign motifs associated with Japanese road culture.

ONIGIRI is inspired by the route signs used on Japan’s national highways. Because the rounded inverted-triangle shape resembles an onigiri rice ball, road enthusiasts in Japan often affectionately refer to these signs as “onigiri.”

HEKISA is inspired by the hexagonal route signs used on prefectural roads and similar local routes. The nickname comes from the English word “hexagon,” and is commonly used among Japanese road enthusiasts.

“Onigiri” and “Hekisa” are not official names for these road signs, but they are familiar nicknames among people who enjoy exploring Japan’s roads.

When traveling through Japan, these national and prefectural route signs can be seen not only on major roads, but also along coastal routes and local roads. Even everyday road signs can reflect a distinctive part of Japanese road culture.

By combining the bold brush-style character 道 with coastal roads, tunnels, natural scenery, and the ONIGIRI and HEKISA motifs, the design expresses the appeal of traveling through Japan, where roads connect one region to another and the journey continues beyond.

From a distance, the design appears as the powerful kanji 道. Up close, the road, tunnel, natural scenery, and road signs can be discovered within the character.

This creates two ways to enjoy the design — as bold Japanese calligraphy and as a detailed travel scene.

Travel along the coast, pass through the tunnel, and continue toward the next view.

This T-shirt expresses the journey that continues beyond the road itself.
