When people hear “Tokyo,” many imagine the 23 special wards or the Tama area on Japan’s main island.

In reality, Tokyo extends far south into the Pacific Ocean and includes the Izu Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, Okinotorishima, and Minamitorishima.

This original T-shirt design shows the entire Japanese archipelago in the background while highlighting only the areas and islands that belong to Tokyo Metropolis in dark green, revealing just how far Tokyo actually extends.

The words “TOKYO METROPOLIS” are placed at the top of the design in the same dark green as Tokyo and its islands, visually unifying all of these distant locations as part of one Tokyo Metropolis.

About the Design

The Japanese archipelago is shown in a light color, while Tokyo Metropolis alone is highlighted in dark green.

Moving south from mainland Tokyo, the map includes the Izu Islands, such as Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Kozushima, Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Hachijojima, Aogashima, and Torishima.

Farther south are the Ogasawara Islands, including Chichijima, Hahajima, Kita-Ioto, Ioto, and Minami-Ioto.

Beyond them are Okinotorishima, Japan’s southernmost point, and Minamitorishima, Japan’s easternmost point. Both are part of Ogasawara Village, Tokyo Metropolis.

By using the same dark green color for mainland Tokyo and the islands scattered across the Pacific, the design makes it easy to see that these distant locations all belong to Tokyo.
