About This Product

This is an original T-shirt by Hasegawa Shizen Kobo featuring the scenery of a Japanese national highway running through the mountains, expressed within the bold brush-style kanji character “道 (Michi).”

At the center of the design is the powerful kanji “道 (Michi / MICHI)”, rendered in a traditional brush-inspired style.

Mountain roads surrounded by deep greenery, slopes covered in trees, and open views toward the sky are a familiar part of traveling through rural Japan. Across the country, national highways wind through mountainous landscapes, connecting towns and regions while offering a distinctive driving experience through nature.

This T-shirt captures the feeling of traveling along a Japanese mountain highway, placing that road scenery within the shape of the kanji “道.”

The design combines blue sky, lush greenery, a winding mountain road, and road signs to express the atmosphere of driving through Japan’s mountainous regions and the scenery encountered along the journey.

A yellow animal warning sign has also been deliberately included as a distinctive detail. It adds to the feeling of traveling through a natural mountain environment and reflects the kind of roadside signs that can be encountered on rural Japanese roads.

In the distance, a black car driving ahead can also be seen. This subtle detail gives the design a sense of movement and creates the impression that the journey continues farther down the road.

The design also incorporates road-sign motifs known among Japanese road enthusiasts as “ONIGIRI” and “HEKISA,” adding another element of Japan’s distinctive road culture.

This shirt is recommended for people who enjoy driving, motorcycle touring, mountain roads, national highways, maps, kanji, and Japanese culture, as well as anyone who wants to keep the memory of a journey close.

It also makes a memorable souvenir from Japan or a distinctive gift for someone interested in Japanese roads and travel scenery.

About the Design

The main feature of the design is the bold brush-style kanji “道.”

Rather than simply placing the character on the shirt, the kanji itself is used as a canvas for expressing Japanese mountain-road scenery.

Inside the character are a national highway running through the mountains, surrounding greenery, blue sky, and road signs.

The composition focuses on a road continuing forward through the mountains, creating a sense of movement and suggesting a journey that continues toward the landscape ahead.

On the left side of the design is a yellow animal warning sign. Signs like this can be seen on mountain roads and rural routes in Japan, making it a distinctive visual element that reflects the feeling of driving through nature.

A black car can also be seen farther ahead on the road, adding a subtle sense of realism and making the scene feel more like an actual journey through the mountains.

The design also incorporates two motifs associated with Japanese road culture: “ONIGIRI” and “HEKISA.”

ONIGIRI is inspired by the route signs used on Japan’s national highways. Their rounded inverted-triangle shape resembles an onigiri rice ball, so Japanese road enthusiasts affectionately refer to these signs as “onigiri.”

HEKISA is inspired by the hexagonal route signs used on prefectural roads and similar local routes. The nickname comes from the English word “hexagon” and is commonly used among Japanese road enthusiasts.

“Onigiri” and “Hekisa” are not the official names of these road signs, but they are familiar nicknames among people who enjoy exploring Japan’s roads.

When traveling through Japan, you can encounter these national and prefectural route signs on mountain roads and local roads throughout the country. Even ordinary road signs reflect a distinctive part of Japanese road culture.

By combining the bold brush-style character “道” with mountain-road scenery, nature, road signs, and the ONIGIRI and HEKISA motifs, the design expresses the appeal of Japanese roads that cross mountains, connect one region to another, and carry the journey onward.

From a distance, the design appears as the powerful kanji “道.” Up close, the mountain road, natural scenery, road signs, and small details of the journey can be discovered within the character, creating two different ways to enjoy the design.

Travel along a mountain highway, enjoy the changing scenery, and continue toward the next destination.

This T-shirt expresses the journey that continues beyond the road itself.
